Handmade and vintage market are spreading up across the world and young people are rediscovering the crafts practiced by their ancestors through DIY tutorials. The traditional peasant garments are starting to know a springing trend, but we will discuss today about the National and International revival of “La Blouse Roumaine”simply named “IE” (EE-yeh) among Romanians.
Originally worn by Byzantine nobles in the sixteenth century and later adopted by peasants, “La Blouse Roumaine” is definitely the strongest representative pieces of Romanian folklore. Mostly made out of cotton, flax, hemp and silk and a manually-worked embroidery that can take up to three weeks for just one single blouse to be made, with numerous floral patterns, “La Blouse Roumaine” is like a poetry about femininity and beauty.
It’s beauty captured the attention of big names in the fashion industry and it has soon became an International Trendsetter:
Yves Saint Laurent was the first designer to introduce “La Blouse Roumaine” in his collection in 1981, as homage to Henri Matisse.

During the 20th century, the famous French painter, Henri Matisse, received a piece of “IE” as a present from Theodor Pallady, a Romanian painter and his colleague from École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He was so fascinated about this garment that he created a series of important works, portraying women in Romanian blouses.
