2016 is an important year for the Romanian legacy, commemorating 140 years since the birth of one of the greatest artists of all time: the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. The personality of Constantin Brâncuși will be celebrated all throughout 2016.
For the first, this year, 19th February has been declared National Day in Romania to commemorate Constantin Brâncuși.
Constantin Brâncuși (1876–1957) was born in Romania, but starting 1904 he lived and worked as a sculptor in Paris. He was preoccupied by the bird theme, culminating in the sculpture Bird in Space, of which he made 15 versions in marble and bronze and a number of plaster casts.
When you mix Art with Fashion, you end up with an exquisite collection signed by Valentino!
2014 New York Haute Couture Fashion Show hosted something unique: Valentino presented the collection Sala Bianca 945. The exhibition was a tribute to the original to Valentino Garavani’s iconic 1968 white collection.
Valentino’s collection was also a tribute to the great artist Constantin Brâncuși, whose sculptures inspired the accessories that spiced the collection, from heels to envelope bags.
That wasn’t the only homage though. There was also a Jackie O pleated muslin dress matched with a cashmere cape and even a 5th Avenue double silk suit. The suit is sure to find it’s way into the closets of some of the 25 couples that were flown in for the show that comprise the brand’s top customers. As will the accessories with their Constantin Brâncuși inspired detailing.
For the first time in the over the last 50 years, Valentino decided to show its couture creations in the United State and the duo did not disappoint. They even added an extra level of reverence and reference to the heritage of the brand. In a nod to founder Valentino Garavani’s famous White Collection of 1968, from which Jacqueline Kennedy chose her wedding gown to marry Aristotle Onassis, the designers created their own all white line up of one-of-a-kind creations.
What can I say? I am thrilled that our nation’s greatest artist, Constantin Brâncuși, was a true inspiration.
